With Summer well and truly upon us, it’s a great time to rethink your living spaces and bring some refreshing holiday vibes to your place.
To me, an Australian Summer is about long days at the beach, catch ups with friends on warm nights, kids running around on holidays, the chink of drinks, backyard cricket, the smell of sausages on the BBQ and freshly mowed lawn. It calls for relaxed, livable spaces that are child friendly, functional and great for entertaining – essentially spaces which reflect and accommodate our summer lifestyles.
With form AND functionality topping my list of interior and exterior priorities, here’s some of my tips to make your home exude some breezy summer vibes.

Bring The Outdoors In
To me, no room is complete without some form of plant life, whether it be a vase of flowers or a potted fern, our green friends bring plenty of freshness and lush summery vibes to our interiors. Something we crave, particularly in the summer months.
Tropicana, Banana, Pinacolada?
We’ve seen Pineapples, Watermelons and Parrots, now it’s time for Flamingoes and banana leaves. Tropicana themes are currently ‘all the rage’ so this is a super trendy fun way to inject some summer vibes into your home. Just remember it’s a trend, so choose inexpensive décor accessories to reflect this Tropicana vibe like fun tropical print cushions, or an indoor plant, rather than opting for that oversized Flamingo wall art or the watermelon print couch!
Natural fibers are a huge favourite of mine. They reflect the natural environment around us, bring a rawness and neutrality to any space and deliver on a relaxed and summery vibe. Consider a jute floor rug, or perhaps a few market baskets, a wicker pendant light or placemats to bring some relaxed, summer beach vibes to your living spaces.
Natural light is a ‘must have’ and my biggest priority for any style brief. It brings with it grandeur, space and a clean canvas, which allows every item and accessory in the room to shine. If you’re considering painting, go for a neutral white to encourage natural light to bounce around the room and to keep things fresh and contemporary. Think of other ways to draw in the natural light, like positioning a mirror opposite a large window or changing your window coverings to a lighter fabric.
Summer is the season for entertaining, so make sure you’ve considered any potential guests in your interior and exterior layouts. Summer BBQs are often hosted outdoors, so don’t forget to keep your alfresco fresh – perhaps some ferns potted in bright pots, or some outdoor cushions for the daybed or even a hammock for those long afternoon siestas? From the furniture they will sit on, to the homewares they will use and the décor choices they will appreciate – what are the best choices to make them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible? A big, beautiful glass full of icy Gin & Tonic always helps!
The Kids Are All Right!
Finally but most importantly, Summer means plenty of time spent with the kids, so no interior refresh would be complete without considering how to accommodate some extra accessories and mess. Instead of dreading the trail they leave after constantly traipsing through the house, why not have a few well thought out spaces that accommodate their extras. Perhaps a basket at the front door for goggles and beach toys, or install some hooks on the verandah for some Turkish Beach Towels? Maybe it’s about choosing the right outdoor oil cloth tablecloth to accommodate arts and craft activities, or setting up a specific space in your house for quiet, kid friendly movie nights. So many of our best childhood memories are made in Summer, so instead of dreading the disarray, embrace the goodness with some helpful, functional ideas to contain the mess, or at least make for an easier clean up.
Whatever your design and decorating preferences, make sure you consider functionality and form for a truly summery, welcoming, breezy and livable living space.
